I have been asked many different times to describe our show “For the love of Cash”.  I have spent hours trying to think of new ways to describe just the show itself.  A description of this show might sound like many other top billing shows and would fall far short of being accurate. So, I have come to the conclusion that its not easily described by words. However, many others have described it as musically authentic, high energy, spontaneous, and an emotionally captivating experience.

This is not a watered down “theme park show” presented by weekend warriors in costumes, so to speak.  Instead, it is performed by legendary Nashville musicians who played for some of the greatest legends in country music. “For the Love of Cash” will soon to be in its fifth consecutive season.

In addition to Johnny Cash, the show features music from the Highwaymen, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson. There is also at least a half-dozen impersonations from Ray Charles, John Conlee, Edith Bunker, to Aunt Bee, Hank Hill, and whoever else I decide to spontaneously channel. Though I have been dubbed “King of the Tribute Artists” this was not my original intent. I was a singer/songwriter first and decided to do a Cash tribute CD and the rest is history. You will hear a few original songs that will have you singing along the very first time you hear them.  We have had 3 singles released since 2016 and a new album is coming in 2018-2019.

I believe there are three important aspects to describing this show

The People, Experience, and Originality.

The People/Experience

The band is made up of legendary Nashville musicians that have played for dozens of country music legends. Every one of the musicians in my band have worked for Grand Ole Opry stars and have worked the Grand Ole Opry stage countless times.

They have performed on multiple TV shows on CMT, TNN, CBS, and even honored to have performed before Queen Elizabeth II. These musicians are among the very best in the business and importantly are also among the most kind and humble folks you will come across and work with.

Gregg Hutchins – Drums    19 years on the Grand Ole Opry with Jean Shepard.

                                                Music producer, gospel radio personality.

JD Hatfield -  Harmonica    20 years on the Grand Ole Opry with Del Reeves.

Glen Dickerson – Guitar    19 years on the Grand Ole Opry with Jean Shepard,

Has worked as staff guitarist on the Grand Ole Opry

backing dozens of major country music artist.

Rex Clem – Bass Guitar     Performed with Bobby Helms (Jingle Bell Rock) ,

Tommy Cash, Mark Allen Cash, Charlie Pride,

                                               Del Reeves and many others.

Gary West

Performed on the Grand Ole Opry for the first time in 1988, when he was just 23 years old with Grand Ole Opry Star Del Reeves. Earlier that same year Gary toured with Tommy Cash, the brother of Johnny Cash. Gary continued to sing and perform at many of Nashville’s most popular venues such as the Jack Daniels Saloon at the Opryland Hotel, the center stage at the Opry Mills Mall, for six years, the Music City Queen river boat, and most every club on Broadway in Nashville.

Gary has worked with dozens of country music legends including 12 years with Country Music Hall of Fame member Little Jimmy Dickens. He has performed with such legends as Johnny Paycheck, Porter Wagoner, Johnny Russell, Jean Shepard, Del Reeves, Billy Walker, Jett Williams, Skeeter Davis, Connie Smith, The Legendary Drifters, and was a member of Hank Williams Drifting Cowboys band with Don Helms and Jerry Rivers.

Gary West has invested his entire life to music. He has spent years at the Grand Ole Opry and at other major venues across the country performing and watching some of the greatest music stars of all time.

One of the most significant things to note is that Gary has worked for two of the greatest “Entertainers” that has ever lived, Little Jimmy Dickens and Del Reeves.

They both were known as the “Entertainers, Entertainer”.

When you see a show with Gary West and his amazing band you are looking and listening to a “Showman” that has spent years watching, performing with, and learning from “The Masters” of showmanship!  The best part is, both of the showman that Gary learned from were performers who were ORIGINAL! They were true pioneers and set the bar high for entertainers across the globe.  They didn’t have big big screens on stage, light shows, flash pots, or dancers. Only a spotlight, a great band, and the desire to see folks enjoy themselves to the fullest with the unique ability to connect to an audience. It is seldom that you get to see this type of entertainment. Flashing lights, dancers and rope swinging trapeze acts have replaced the stand up entertainer.

Just like his predecessors, Gary’s show is truly spontaneous, and he will seldom stick to a set list and this keeps even the band guessing what he will do next.  This is where the fun starts. When his amazing impromptu and whimsical personality take charge…  This is Real ENTERTAINMENT.

Originality – Gary West is a Nashville Recording Artist who not only produces his own music but has produced and/or recorded many other artists such as Ken Mellons, Mark Collie, Craig Campbell and others.

In 2017 a song he produced for Scotty Ray Morton was awarded “Song of the year” by the Josie Awards.

Gary is NOT a Johnny Cash impersonator; he is an ENTERTAINER. He is an impressionist, musician, comedian, and has been nominated for several awards including, Tribute Artist of the Year (2017), Americana Artist of the Year (2017).  Traditional/Classic Country Music Artist of the Year (2018) and Song of the Year 2018 in the Classic Country Category.  The "Hobo Song" was written by Mike Oldham and included on "For the love of Cash Vol 2."
